One of two pollarded oaks on the site, which probably marked an ancient boundary between two fields. Pollarding was a way of harvesting timber from the tree without chopping it down altogether. This oak was first pollarded about forty years ago and after many years of neglect has recently undergone the first step in the process of re-pollarding. If left uncut, the branches may grow too heavy for the trunk and cause it to split or collapse. |
